relative weight

Hi
I am running caseDEM and my question is what exactly relative weight is and how to calculate it?

I would really appreciate any help.

  • Hi Leila,

Page 49 of XML_v4.0_GUIDE (included in the documentation) should be helpful.

To provide an example: Check out the case XML for CaseSolids (part of 10_CASEDEM). "rhop0" is defined in the "constantsdef" portion of the case XML file and is set to 1000 kg/m^3. The DEM objects are set to have a relative weight of 1.25. Therefore, the density of the DEM objects will be set to 1250 kg/m^3. If "rhop0" were set to 1500 and relative weight were still 1.25, the density of the DEM object would be set to 1875 kg/m^3. In this way, relative weight is a quick and easy way of controlling buoyancy, particularly when dealing with non-standard rhop0 values.

That said, I usually prefer to use "rhopbody" instead of "relativeweight" because DEM / floating object density is explicitly defined by me.
  • Dear NWRichmond ,

Your comment was really helpful. Thank you so much.
